Charlotte Troutbeck nee Bushby was married to William Troutbeck, a descendent of Sir John Troutbeck, High Sheriff of Chester during the reign of Henry VI, the 'boy king' who acceded to the throne at just 9 months old and was King of both England and France until he was deposed.
This beautiful memorial brooch remembers Charlotte who died in 1833 and contains a small plaited locket of hair as a memorial behind crystal glass. Considered macabre by today's standards, it must be remembered that at this time there were no photographs or videos and so this memorialisation was seen as loving and sentimental - a way of remembering those that had passed.
The locket itself tests as approximately 10ct gold, and is beautifully carved and enamelled with 'IN MEMORY OF'. This is a fabulous piece of history as well as a very pretty article.
